Getting the Edge on Artificial Grass

getting the edge grass

If you’re thinking about purchasing artificial lawn, don’t be fooled into thinking that every grass is the same and serves the same purpose. Like many things you pay for what you get, so be sure to choose. Our grasses are Australian-made, developed for the Australian climate, child-safe, pet-friendly, UV stabilised, low maintenance and cooler than competitor products.

But just as important as the choice of lawn is the choice of edging. The type of edging you choose can make a significant difference to the result. Edging not only provides an anchoring point for the turf, but it prevents the base material from spreading, ensuring a good foundation.

Base prep

If you’re a confident DIYer or landscaper and have got the energy and time to dig out your lawn area to 80mm depth, fill it with crushed road base and compact it with a vibrating plate, then installing your own artificial lawn is a great project.
However, we do recommend using a SYNLawn Certified Installation Professional to ensure you receive a great finished result and to minimise any issues post-installation.

Timber edging

Timber is probably the most popular and affordable option for edging. It’s easy to install and looks good. You can use standard-sized, pressure-treated timber, for example100mm x 50mm, or opt for larger edges with sleepers You could also create timber planter boxes for the edging.

You can fix the turf to timber with 150mm flat head nails at 500mm intervals. Whatever timber you use, make sure it’s H4 standard to slow down rotting and plan on replacing the timber in about 10 year’s time.

Composite plastic lumber

Composite plastic lumber is textured wood but is made from recycled plastic. It costs more than timber but has significant advantages – it won’t rot, termites won’t eat it and it’s low maintenance. It also has a longer life span with up to 25 year warranties. Fixing this material is the same as what you would do with timber.

Brick paving

Brick or stone paving can work well especially if you have already used it in your other outdoor areas. Consider whether you want a flush finish at the lawn level (allow 15-20mm for the lawn) or whether your edge will be raised, Fix the turf with landscape pegs.

Concrete

Concrete sleepers are readily available and can be used as you would use timber sleepers. Alternately, if you’re after curves and non-linear shapes in your lawn, you can build formworks to suit and pour concrete to create a unique border. Concrete offers greater flexibility and durability than many other edging materials.

Steel

Steel also allows you to form curves in a lawn edge, and it gives your area a more industrial look. The rusty colour is a great contrast to a green lawn – perfect for a backyard putting green. Steel is more expensive than timber but will last forever.
