What is the lifespan of artificial grass?

December 17th, 2020

If you are investing money in your property by installing an artificial lawn, then it’s fair to say that you want the highest quality available on the market. Furthermore, you likely want a competitive price, a good warranty, and a product that will stand the test of time.

While the main benefits of artificial grass  are obvious (bye bye lawnmower, whipper snipper and weed killer, hello consistent looking lawns and more free time), choosing a reputable brand and the right grass for your needs, is key.

Keeping that in mind, exactly how long can you expect your fake grass to last?

Factors that affect the lifespan of your artificial grass

Quality is one of the biggest factors that determines the life of your artificial lawn and when you compare premium products with the cheaper, imported alternatives (usually bought from large hardware stores) there is no comparison. Our artificial grass is made in Australia from local products with yarn that’s Australian made and designed for the harsh Australian climate. This is an Australian-made product designed for Australians!

In fact, cheaper imported turf often uses low-grade plastics that lack proper UV protection, causing them to degrade within a few summers. SYNLawn’s premium products, on the other hand, feature exclusive COOLplus® technology woven directly into the fibres. This reflects infrared rays, helping to keep the surface up to 20% cooler and protecting the structural integrity of the grass over the long term.

Everyone has different needs when it comes to upgrading their outdoor spaces. You may require a surface  to be suitable for pets, kids, putting greens, sporting ovals, or even restaurant courtyards. Having an off-the-shelf grass that doesn’t take these unique demands into consideration can reduce the lifespan of the product. With SYNLawn, there is no one-grass fits-all approach, instead, we engineer our synthetic grass  to suit specific requirements, so it’s always fit for purpose.

To ensure maximum longevity, it is crucial to match the product to the application. For instance:

Residential Spaces
For home gardens and pool surrounds, you need a durable yet soft landscape turf that resists heavy foot traffic and pool chemicals.

Pet-Friendly Zones
Active dogs require specialised pet turf like our Pet Premium Super. It features Trionic Plus™ yarn, a molecular fusion of nylon and polyethylene. This fake grass has extreme durability, alongside double-perforated backing for superior drainage.

Backyard Putting Greens
Golf turf, such as Precision Putt, features a short, dense texturised nylon pile designed to handle repetitive club impacts without wearing thin.

Commercial Environments
For retail precincts and childcare centres, commercial artificial grass is engineered with maximum wear ratings to endure thousands of daily footsteps.

Of course, there are other factors that influence the longevity of your synthetic grass, apart from its quality, and one of these is simply the wear and tear created by pedestrian traffic (although in the case of golf courses that might include golf buggies!). However, we design our synthetic turf for high durability so it can withstand a lot of traffic over the years, whereas many cheaper alternatives mat down and wear out very quickly.

The critical role of professional synthetic grass installation

Even the highest-quality artificial turf will underperform if it isn’t installed correctly. Professional installation plays a massive role in how your surface looks, drains, and lasts over time. The longevity of your lawn depends heavily on what happens underneath the surface. A professional installer will excavate the existing soil, lay a weed barrier, and install a dual-layered sub-base of compacted crushed rock (road base) and cracker dust. This creates a rock-hard, stable foundation that prevents sinking and undulations, while remaining porous enough for rapid water drainage.

Furthermore, experts ensure precision cutting around garden beds, secure edging to prevent lifting, and seamless joining using high-strength turf tape and adhesive. Whether you need artificial grass in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, or Perth, leveraging a certified installation network guarantees your investment is built on a foundation designed to last and protects your manufacturer’s warranty.

How to keep your fake grass and turf looking as good as new

Artificial grass requires much less maintenance than traditional lawns, but it does require some basic care to aid its durability. This involves removing any accumulated debris, such as leaves that blow onto the lawn, as well as any solid pet waste. Light staining can be cleaned with a 5% solution of mild household detergent and warm water, whilst for heavy staining this should be followed by sponge mopping using a 3% solution of household ammonia and hot water. (If you have dogs, a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner like P-Off is highly recommended to break down organic waste at a molecular level and keep the area smelling fresh).

Other cleaning methods for tree sap, chewing gum, fungus and so on can be found on our maintenance page. More regular maintenance simply involves occasionally brushing with a stiff brush and a hose down with water. Not forgetting to apply infill to your synthetic turf on a regular basis to provide added durability, drainage and performance.

Beyond its durability, a well-maintained synthetic lawn also delivers incredible environmental benefits over its lifespan. By eliminating the need for regular watering, a typical installation saves tens of thousands of litres of water annually, while also completely removing toxic fertilisers and carbon emissions from petrol lawnmowers from the equation.

If you maintain a high quality artificial grass using the above information, it will continue looking fresh, upright and brand new for many years into the future.

SYNLawn artificial turf and grass has up to a 15-year warranty, so you can expect it to look as good as the day it was installed for at least that long and even longer.
