5 Easy Tips To Caring For Your Artificial Grass

5 Easy Tips To Caring For Your Artificial Grass

November 18th, 2019

Even though artificial grass is low maintenance and high durability, you can still take measures to ensure maximum longevity for your lawn and have it looking at its best.

Upgrading to premium artificial grass is a brilliant way to reclaim your weekends and reduce your household water consumption, but a “low maintenance” lawn does not mean a “no maintenance” lawn. Implementing a basic care routine helps protect your investment, ensuring your synthetic turf remains pristine, functional, and ready for entertaining in all Australian weather conditions.

1. Remove Debris from Artificial Grass

Occasionally debris will land on your astro turf from nearby overhanging trees or general use. Removing debris regularly with a brush, leaf blower or by hand is highly recommended. Organic matter should not be allowed to build up, as this can cause weeds to grow which can affect the drainage.

When leaves, twigs, and bark are left to decompose on your lawn, they eventually break down into a nutrient-rich soil layer. This gives airborne weed seeds the perfect environment to take root. To prevent this, make it a habit to clear your yard weekly. When using a leaf blower, hold the nozzle at a 45-degree angle and keep it about 12 to 18 inches from the surface. This allows you to “skim” the lightweight debris off the top without displacing the crucial sand infill that weighs your turf down.

Alternatively, use a plastic rake or a stiff-bristled synthetic broom. Never use heavy metal rakes, as they can snag the fibres and damage the backing. Regular brushing also keeps the fibres upright, preventing your landscaping turf from looking flat and matted in high-traffic zones.

2. Remove Stains

SYNLawn’s synthetic grass is highly resistant to stains, but like all stains, the sooner you remove them the better. How you will need to remove the stain will depend on the type of stain present.

Stains which can be removed with detergent and water:

Soft drinks, milk, alcohol, coffee, tea, ice cream, tomato sauce, blood, juice, mustard, butter, glues

Stains which require mineral spirits and grease spot removers:

Grease, cooking oil, suntan lotion, ink, nail polish, shoe polish

After using any products make sure you rinse the turf thoroughly with warm water. This will help get rid of the cleaner’s chemical residue.

3. Fake Grass Requires Weed Killer Annually

Once a year using a weed killer or special herbicide treatment on your fake grass will help prevent weeds or moss from inhabiting your lawn. Any vegetation can be easily pulled out or swept off the artificial turf.

Because our top-tier synthetic turf features a perforated backing designed for rapid water dispersal (draining at a rate of up to 2,000mm per hour), keeping the surface clear of deep-rooted weeds ensures your drainage system continues to operate at peak efficiency.

When selecting a weed killer, always opt for a water-based, pet-safe herbicide to protect the health of your family and local wildlife. Applying this treatment at the start of spring is an easy, proactive step to keep your lawn looking manicured all year long.

4. Dust and Pollen Build Up

Dust and pollen usually wash away on your turf from the rain, but if you notice a build-up simply hose down the area with water to remove these particles. It is especially important to remove these if those in your household, especially kids, have asthma.

During Australia’s notoriously dry summers, dust can quickly accumulate on outdoor surfaces. By giving your lawn a light misting with the garden hose every few weeks, you not only wash away allergens but also activate the incredible evaporative cooling benefits of our surface technology.

All SYNLawn products feature exclusive COOLplus® technology, which uses infrared-reflective pigments to dissipate heat rather than absorb it. A quick rinse can rapidly drop the surface temperature, keeping your backyard cool and comfortable for children playing barefoot in the afternoon sun.

5. Animal Waste

Your pets will generally spend more time in your backyard than you will, so they will definitely be using your fake turf as their toilet. Urine and animal droppings can be easily removed with warm water and detergent. Your SYNLawn synthetic turf will not get damaged from your pets bodily functions and there is rarely any odour build up. Should you need a deodoriser we can provide a fantastic pet cleaning solution for your artificial lawn.

For households with active dogs, upgrading to a dedicated pet-friendly artificial grass system is highly recommended. Products like our Pet Premium Super feature double perforations for unmatched vertical drainage, meaning urine flows straight through into the sub-base without pooling.

When picking up solid waste, allow it to dry slightly, then scoop it up. Because our turf has a high-density pile, the waste sits neatly on top rather than becoming smeared into the fibres. For a deeper clean, we highly recommend our P-Off Enzymatic Cleaner. Unlike standard detergents that merely mask smells, P-Off breaks down the organic proteins in urine and faeces at a molecular level.

P-Off is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and veterinarian-recommended, ensuring your pets stay safe while your yard smells pristine. Simply spray the affected area, let the enzymes work their magic for a few minutes, and gently hose it down.
